The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op is involved in a new collaborative program called “One Farm at a Time”. This group is working to raise funds and awareness to preserve our local farms so that we’ll have sources for fresh, local and sustainable food – forever!

We are launching the program with screenings of an inspiring documentary-in-progress about Good Humus Produce – a small farm in California’s Capay Valley. Farmers Jeff and Annie Main have been working to purchase an easement to protect their farm for future generations, and One Farm at a Time is going to help make it happen – with your help!

The Last Crop: Screening and Discussion
Friday, April 30, 5:30 and 8:30 pm.
If you want to eat local food, we must preserve our local farms. Capay Valley’s Good Humus Produce provides healthy and delicious organic produce to our region, and is being preserved so that it will continue to do so for generations to come. The Last Crop is a documentary film that tells the story of Jeff and Annie Main, their farm and their vision. This inspiring evening will include a discussion with the farmers and filmmaker. Organic snacks, beer and wine will be available.
To register, for more information and to watch a trailer of the film, visit www.sacfoodcoop.com

For immediate release: A New Batch of Food Films at the Second Installment of “Hungry Filmmakers” January 26, 2010: Back by popular demand, the food documentary film screening and discussion event Hungry Filmmakers will return to Anthology Film Archives on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. This follows the incredibly enthusiastic response to the inaugural Hungry Filmmakers in December, which featured upcoming films by Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, Mascha and Manfred Poppenk, and was moderated by Anna Lappé. The organizers hope to grow the series and its community of filmmakers and fans with another exciting lineup of screenings. Hungry Filmmakers aims to showcase the work of filmmakers who are dedicated to furthering sustainable food dialogue in a social, friendly environment that allows for deeper discussion. Offering viewers a sampling rather than a full screening of each, the program includes ten-minute excerpts of each of the featured films. Kerry Trueman, editor of EatingLiberally.org, will moderate a panel discussion with the directors and/or producers following the screenings. Throughout the films in this lineup, our filmmakers explore the dire effects of over fishing and the underlying causes of food-borne illnesses; the lack of fresh food in underserved communities, and the growth of sustainable food production practices that are inspirational to all.
The films: FRESH Ana Sofia Joanes MAD COW INVESTIGATOR Nancye Good WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE? Catherine Gund THE END OF THE LINE Rupert Murray FLY ON THE WALL Jenny Montasir
When: February 23, 2010 Anthology Film Archives 32 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003 Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Screenings begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. $15 at door and in advance: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/93405 (link on http://hungryfilmmakers.blogspot.com/ )
A reception will follow in the theatre lobby with complimentary snacks, Lagunitas beer and wine from T Edwards. BYOC (bring your own cup) strongly encouraged if you wish to have a drink.
Hungry Filmmakers is a not-for-profit event hosted by Shelley Rogers, Cathy Erway, Jimmy’s No. 43 and Tim Lynch. Proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit organization Just Food, which works to promote access of fresh, seasonal, sustainable grown food for all New York City residents.
Jimmy’s No. 43 is a bar and restaurant that is committed to supporting the local arts and sustainable food communities. Awarded “Best Bar with Good Food” by New York Magazine, “Favorite NY Pubs” by Forbes and a “Snail of Approval” for its use of local farm-sourced ingredients from Slow Food NYC, Jimmy’s No. 43 hosts many events and fundraisers, and founded the Good Beer Seal bar community. Anthology Film Archives is an international center for the preservation, study and exhibition of film and video with a particular focus on American avant-garde cinema.

Catch What’s on Your Plate?, the documentary about kids and food politics, on national TV this February 7th, 2010!

Join families across the country for a Family Cook-In! on Sunday, February 7th and spend an afternoon learning with your kids about food – what it’s made of, where it come from and how to enjoy every bite.

First, download our Screening Toolkit. (Go to: http://whatsonyourplateproject.org/blog/takeaction/toolkit).

It has all the stuff you need to have a fun and delicious Family Cook-In!
Second, watch What’s on Your Plate? at 2:00 p.m. on Discovery’s Planet Green. (Go to http:planetgreen.channelfinder.net to find your local channel).
Third, check out the games and activities in our Screening Toolkit.
Fourth, cook and eat together! Get everyone in the kitchen chopping, stirring, pouring and baking. Then sit down together for some fresh and yummy home-cooked food.

Think food justice is too tricky for kids? Think again.

What’s On Your Plate? proves that not only can kids understand the issues, they can actually teach other kids about how they are what they eat.

The film follows two eleven-year-old multi-racial city kids as they explore their place in the food chain. Sadie and Safiyah take a close look at food systems in New York City and its surrounding areas. With the camera as their companion, the girl guides talk to each other, food activists, farmers, new friends, storekeepers, their families, and the viewer, in their quest to understand what’s on all of our plates.

According to Michael Pollan: “”What’s On Your Plate?” is exactly the film we need now.”

And Alice Waters says: “It was an amazing experience to hear kids talking about these issues. This movie can have a real impact on the way we think about what we’re eating.”

THIS YEAR’S KEYNOTES:

Topic to be announced.

CHUCK HASSEBROOK “A Wave of Change: Challenges and Hope for Transforming the American Food and Farming System”; Friday, February 26th

As Executive Director for the Center for Rural Affairs, a nationally recognized research, advocacy, and rural development organization, Chuck Hassebrook has tirelessly championed family farming and ranching, small business, and entrepreneurial rural development. Through over thirty years of rural activism, Hassebrook has seen that organic and sustainable agriculture are creating a wave of change in the farm and food systems that offer rural people and communities the opportunity to retake control of their destinies. Formidable challenges stand in the way, but history and people’s freedom to make their own choices provide hope for a brighter future in rural America.

DR. MARGARET MELLON “Two Views of Food Safety: Organic Agriculture and Biotechnology”; Saturday, February 27th

Dr. Margaret Mellon directs the Food and Environment Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. The program promotes a transition to sustainable agriculture and focuses on critically evaluating the use of biotechnology in plant and animal agriculture as well as assessing animal agriculture’s contribution to the rise of antibiotic-resistant disease. Trained as both a scientist and a lawyer, Mellon considers food safety through two lenses: organic agriculture and biotechnology. Exploring how people relate to food safety in these contexts as well as through scientific and legal perspectives, Mellon’s work considers how to put the issue of food safety into the context of the ongoing debates about the future of agriculture.
